There are some basic principles portrait photographers should know when transferring their photographic skills to fashion. The primary concern is what part of the photograph draws the viewer's attention. The red rose is a simple example: The blossom represents the model's face, and the stem is the clothing. If you put the rose against a green background, the blossom stands out, but by laying the rose on a red background, the eye is drawn to the stem. This same principle holds true for the model: A dark background brings out the face, and a light background accentuates the dress.
